first post, rambling thoughts to various Library 2.0 information

So... new blog. The girl & the blog. I have another blog; it doesn't get much use really. It has reverted into a list of books I read. This may become that in a few months. This is a blog for one of my employers to know I can use this internet tool. I can and we do.

I have a running debate with a good friend of mine about the possible evil of the library and the internet merging, the end result being the disappearance of books. I like the internet. Some of the best relationships in my life began or are maintained through it. I like books too, love is probably more accurate... the way they smell... textures of different paper... preserving some vary carefully... manipulating others that have passed from traditional usefulness. I'm not even talking about content at this point because I'm addicted to stories.

I'm not against library people becoming more internet savey, for the record. I think that to do anything less that utilize it as a resource would be neglectful both towards our own intellects as well as to the patron that approach us with damningly basic questions. "Damning" here refering to the test of one's ability to keep a straight face for some questions...

I think the more information is possible the more we, humanity, desire to have it, more and more. I've just finished a house/dog-sitty job where the internet was down for the majority of two weeks and I've lived in a town where my "transitory" status as a college student meant I was not allowed to sign up for a card at the local public library. I'd perfer to not to repeat either any time soon. I'm hooked on access to anything that I can think of looking up. It isn't just me, or we wouldn't be doing this.

i have a friend who makes books by hand. She showed me the process one weekend - from a fibrous, goey mass in a bucket;, to frames for drying; to the bound fabric covers into which she wove stones, feathers and other found objects. but there's also something about finding a worn paperback someone left on the bus, corners of pages folded back, a grocery list scribbled in a margin. i think books are somehow in our dna...i hope they don't disappear anytime soon, we would lose something essential about ourselves.

Oh, your blog has inspired me. I was gonna start tracking what I read and putting it on the blog is an excellent idea!
=)

I will never give up tangible books! E-books, blah!

The brilliant Jasper Fforde brings up the end of books in his most recent Thursday Next installment. Which I'm sure you know by now... :)

Fforde makes his books interactive with the use of the internet. It is a full experience. His Jack Spratt Nursery Crime Division novels have their own "Special Features" accessible only on the web featuring deleted scenes and what not. Thursday Next's website is currently offering "corrections" to the text. Goliath Corp and the Special Ops also have their very own official sites. It's all really fun and really makes the reading experience that much more enjoyable.

That could be one way for books to make the leap into the digital age: making them interactive and offering an experience outside the book. I think besides being very creative, Jasper Fforde also recognizes the need to the literary experience to move beyond books in this day and age.

www.jasperfforde.com and all the special sites are linked from there.

I admit it, I hate online books, and I'm a geek. There are so many great technical books out there for free download in PDF or whatever. It is all I can do not to print them out to read them. Save trees for heaven's sake I tell myself. But it is so hard to read them online. I can't get my body comfortable like I can with a real book in my hands.

I'm an imigrant, but I've been in the country a long time...
